Why some research waits

Our research is good at finding sources and recording what each one supports. It reads museum catalogues, archives, scholarship and the work itself.

It can’t decide what a form means to the people it came from. When an Aesthetic draws on a living tradition, a religious practice, a community’s history or a scene with its own names for things, the sources can agree with each other and still miss what matters: who should be credited, which forms aren’t decoration, whether a name came from inside or was applied from outside. Those questions need someone who knows the tradition first-hand, or has studied it closely enough to answer for what they say.

So when research on one of these Aesthetics turns up something new, we record it and stop there. It stays off the page, the Brief, Mix and the data export until people with the right standing have reviewed it and the result has been decided through our research governance.

Nothing public changes in the meantime. Every page, Brief and export for these 17 stays as published until its review is done. This page names the reviews; it doesn’t show what is held.

Who we’re looking for

Standing comes in more than one form. Depending on the Aesthetic, it could be:

Practitioners: Designers, artists, printers and makers working in the tradition now.
People from the community: Whose history, scene or practice the Aesthetic draws on.
Historians and scholars: Design and art historians, and academics who have published on it.
Curators and archivists: People who hold and catalogue the material.
Educators: People who teach this visual history.
Cultural organisations: Museums, societies and community bodies connected to the practice.

No degree is required, and neither is any particular identity. Being from a community doesn’t by itself make someone a reviewer, and not being from it doesn’t rule anyone out. We won’t ask you to prove your ethnicity, nationality or anything like it. We’ll ask what you know and how you came to know it.

Nobody speaks for a whole tradition. We expect to hear from several people on each review, and to keep a record of where they disagree.

What happens after you offer

Annie reads it. Your offer isn’t published and nobody else sees it.
If it looks like a fit, she writes to you, if you said that’s fine, to talk about the review and what you know.
Standing is agreed per Aesthetic, and per area of expertise. Reviewing one part of Desert says nothing about the rest of it, or about Occult, and offering doesn’t make you a reviewer of anything.
Reviewers answer specific questions: a claim, the sources behind it, why it needs review, and what we propose to do with it. Nobody is asked to rule on a whole culture.
What a reviewer says is recorded as evidence, beside the sources and beside what other reviewers say, including where they disagree. One reviewer agreeing never publishes anything.
Held research is released by a separate decision, made through our research governance after review. Until then it stays held.

Credit. If you review, your name appears on the Aesthetic and on any future contributor profile only if you say yes, and you can change your mind later.
