Stratum II

How you recognise it

Stratified horizontal colour bands in dusty rose, ochre and sand, arch and mesa silhouettes, and visible heat haze flattening the middle distance.

The diagnostic condition is stratification plus heat: the bands are geological layers and the haze is temperature, which is what separates it from a warm palette used decoratively.

Layout

From our catalogue entry

Composition: stratified bands.

Color

From our catalogue entry

Colour: earthy gradient.

Imagery

Our reading

Landform and sky only. No built architecture, because the built vocabulary is where the appropriation question sits.

Motion

Our reading

Heat shimmer — slow, continuous, barely moving.

Hierarchy

Our reading

Rank by band position, lowest and warmest reading as nearest. Geological stacking as ranking.

Form / motif / surface / technique

From our catalogue entry

Form/motif/surface: mesa, arch, cacti.

Context

Our reading

The register's withholding stands: what is withheld travels with the World wherever it is used.

Known about Desert: where it comes from, what it is called. Not a part of the design, and not something to check work against.

What stands behind it

Not yet researched. No source attached.

Build guidance: recorded in 6 of 8 research dimensions. It says what usable material is recorded, never how well it is evidenced.

No source attached: Recognition test, Rules. Not researched yet: Summary, Argument, Typeface guidance, Overall positions by area, Ornament and contrast scales, Moving it to screen, Source notes.

Neither is a free hand: an area research has not reached is not permission to decide on the language’s behalf.

What this page withholds, and why: Under the cultural protocol, intent is withheld (no Indigenous source was reached) and the page keeps to landform and sky only — no built architecture, no Southwestern Indigenous pattern, pottery or textile motif. Every architectural and ornamental choice is handed back to standing (community members or practitioners from the relevant Pueblo communities).

Cultural review: Newer research on this Aesthetic waits for review by people with the standing to judge it. What this page shows stands as published. How cultural review works, and how to take part
