Line weight varies to model form: an engraved line swells at the middle and tapers at the ends, an etched line is more even and more wavering. The result is a single ink colour on a light ground, high in detail and low in tonal range. The pattern is most often a halftone dot field specified by frequency and density, but hatching, gradient and texture patterns belong to the same family.
