## How to use this

Paste this file into your agent as context before asking it to design or build something in this visual language. It states what is established, what is our interpretation, and what nobody has established. Treat all three differently.

**The most important section is "Not researched yet".** Its purpose is to stop you and your agent inventing rules that sound right and are not recorded anywhere.

## What this language is

**Defining:** Sticker layers, washi tape, handwriting, rotated elements

**Recognise it by:** Layered stickers, washi tape holding items down at their corners, handwriting in the gaps, and elements rotated off-square and overlapping at their edges, on scanned ephemera. The diagnostic condition is accumulation rather than composition: items sit on top of one another in the order they arrived, and nothing aligns to anything. Digital Collage, a Module, arranges found material deliberately. Hand-Drawn, also a Module, is one mark-making treatment this register uses among several.

**Family:** Handmade & Printed
**Era:** contemporary

**Scope:** The visual register of the personal scrapbook: accumulated ephemera, stickers and handwriting gathered on the page, as Aesthetary's design language. Tape, rotation and layering order are Aesthetary's reading of the craft.

## What it is arguing

A surface that records a life as it accumulates. Each item was added by hand on a different day with no plan for the whole, so the overlap, the rotation and the tape are evidence of time passing rather than compositional decisions.

**It refuses:** Refuses composition, alignment, and any arrangement that implies the whole was planned.

## What it is not

Commonly confused with these. Getting the difference right matters more than getting the surface right:

- Digital Collage
- Hand-Drawn

## Established rules

Grouped by what kind of claim each is. A requirement of the language and our own interpretation are not interchangeable.

**How to read each rule.** Every rule states two separate things, and neither stands in for the other:

- **Kind of claim** (the heading): From our catalogue entry · Our reading · Documented · Source attached.
- **Evidence** (how it is established): Graded by our research brief · No source attached (`DOCUMENTED`) · From our catalogue entry (`SUPPORTED`) · Our reading (`CURATORIAL`) · Not researched yet (`UNKNOWN`) · No grade recorded (no grade in the record). Where a claim has its own canonical label, the Evidence line gives that label instead of the grade.
- **Product area**: which of the twelve areas the rule belongs to (Layout, Typography, Color, Imagery, Surface, Interface, Motion, Motif, Technique, Form, Hierarchy, Density), mapped from its raw area label in bold. "Context" means the rule is about the Aesthetic (its name, origin, lineage) rather than a part of the design. "Not mapped" means the raw area has no single area yet.
- The code in brackets is the `grade` field at `implementationConstraints.tokenRules.value.rules[].provenance.grade` in https://aesthetary.com/data/scrapbook.json. "From our catalogue entry" means: Stated in Aesthetary’s existing catalogue entry. An outside source is named only where one is linked to the claim.

### From our catalogue entry

_Carried over from Aesthetary's original catalogue entry. The reasoning behind it was never recorded._

- **layout** — Composition: rotated, layered, unaligned.
  - Kind of claim: From our catalogue entry · Evidence: From our catalogue entry · Product area: Layout
- **typography** — Typography: handwriting.
  - Kind of claim: From our catalogue entry · Evidence: From our catalogue entry · Product area: Typography
- **imagery** — Imagery: scanned ephemera.
  - Kind of claim: From our catalogue entry · Evidence: From our catalogue entry · Product area: Imagery
- **form / motif / surface / technique** — Form/motif/surface/technique: sticker layers, washi tape.
  - Kind of claim: From our catalogue entry · Evidence: From our catalogue entry · Product area: not mapped

### Our reading

- **hierarchy** — Rank by stacking order — the most recently added item sits on top and therefore leads.
  - Kind of claim: Our reading · Evidence: Our reading · Product area: Hierarchy
- **motion** — Items added on interaction, landing rotated on top of the pile. Native to the accumulation logic.
  - Kind of claim: Our reading · Evidence: Our reading · Product area: Motion
- **composition** — Accumulation by a person over time: overlap, tape, uneven margin and mixed stock read as a sequence of separate decisions rather than one layout.
  - Kind of claim: Our reading · Evidence: Our reading · Product area: Layout
- **color** — Colour arrives with the items: printed scraps, cards, photographs and papers bring their own. Kits sell coordinated papers and stickers, so coordination is a documented option, but no palette is drawn over the items from outside them.
  - Kind of claim: Our reading · Evidence: Our reading · Product area: Color

## Found in research

What research established from sources Aesthetary opened and checked. Each line names its area, how it is known, and where it is scoped. "Seen in the work" means the source documents particular works or products rather than the Aesthetic as a whole.

- **Color** — Some historical albums used black paper pages, which conservators count among the worst for photograph deterioration.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:color-1` · Covers historical photograph albums and scrapbooks.
- **Color** — Digital scrapbooking kits supply colourful papers, stickers and patterns.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:color-2` · Covers digital scrapbooking.
- **Color** — In a pair of Powerhouse Victorian scrap albums, the colour comes from commercially produced, embossed and die-cut pictures glued onto the pages; from 1860, chromolithography let manufacturers produce many high-quality scraps.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:w2-color-1` · Covers Victorian scrap albums, 1860s-1890s (Powerhouse object 1880-1890)..
- **Color** — In one museum's pair of Victorian albums, the scraps are in most cases carefully arranged by themes such as flowers, butterflies, baby farmyard animals and well-dressed ladies and children.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:w2-color-2` · Covers One museum's pair of albums, 1880-1890..
- **Color** — Colour printing is named as one reason scrapbooking caught on; chromolithographed advertising cards were kept because they were thought too beautiful to throw away.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:w2-color-3` · Covers Nineteenth century; encyclopedia-level secondary source..
- **Color** — The modern hobby sells coordination: prepackaged kits bundle coordinated paper with stickers and embellishments, especially for beginners.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:w2-color-4` · Covers Contemporary craft-hobby scrapbooking; encyclopedia-level secondary source..
- **Surface** — Photographs and papers pasted onto pages pull and cockle them, which led album makers to thicker papers and boards.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:surface-1` · Covers 19th-century albums.
- **Surface** — Aged scrapbooks show failing attachments: brittle glue, tapes that lose tack, popped photo corners and rusting pins and staples.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:surface-2` · Covers aged historical scrapbooks.
- **Surface** — Modern hobby scrapbooking prizes archival-quality supplies.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:surface-3` · Covers modern hobby practice.
- **Interface** — Digital scrapbooking software supplies designs and templates for arranging photographs.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:interface-1` · Covers digital scrapbooking.
- **Motion** — Some late-19th and early-20th-century American scrapbooks include movable book elements alongside embossed and lace paper.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:w2-motion-1` · Covers LSU Laughlin collection; physical paper mechanics, not screen motion..
- **Technique** — Items are pasted or otherwise attached to pages, by almost any means available.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:technique-1`
- **Technique** — Modern hobby practice mounts photographs with photo corners, adhesive dots, mounting tape or glue, and journals with pens.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:technique-2` · Covers modern hobby practice.
- **Technique** — Nineteenth-century compilers mixed handwritten entries, sketches, watercolours and printed scraps in the same volume.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:technique-3` · Covers 19th-century journals and scrapbooks.
- **Form** — The scrapbook takes the form of a book, box or card; some bindings add stubs at the spine to compensate for the thickness of inserted material.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:form-1` · Covers sewn album structures.
- **Form** — Inserted items add bulk that can stop the book from closing.
  - Evidence: Documented · Source attached · Claim: `kcc:form-2`

## Positions by area

The overall position recorded for each area. "No overall position recorded" means rules exist for the area but no position above them; the rules still apply. It is not the same as "Not established", which means nobody has researched the area.

- **Layout** — Specified
- **Typography** — Specified
- **Color** — Specified
- **Imagery** — Specified
- **Surface** — Specified
- **Motion** — No overall position recorded
- **Motif** — Specified

## Design grammar — web primitives

A starting grammar for a website in Scrapbook: items pasted, taped or cornered onto a board in the order they arrived, each keeping its own paper and colour, with handwriting in the gaps and the newest on top.

Three kinds of line: **On the record** names a rule this record holds (its wording is under Established rules) and states what it becomes on the web. **Web translation** is Aesthetary's choice for the web, derived from the rules it cites; change it if you have a reason, keep the cited rule. **Not specified by the source** means the research reached this but the sources say nothing about it; **Not researched yet** means the research has not reached it yet. Either way, follow the instruction and do not invent a rule. Structured version: `designGrammar` in data/scrapbook.json.

### Colour

| Role | Value | Contrast | Use | Kind |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| board | `#C7AE8B` | — | The kraft ground the pile sits on. | Web translation |
| board-ink | `#2E2114` | 7.3:1 | Handwriting and tags written straight on the board. | Web translation |
| card | `#F6F1E3` | 11.9:1 (#23303B on it) | Catalogue-card stock. | Web translation |
| pad | `#F8E9A0` | 10.9:1 (#3A2E07 on it) | Legal-pad stock. | Web translation |
| sticker | `#F4C7D2` | 9.9:1 (#4A1322 on it) | One sticker among several. | Web translation |

Other accents the record supports:

- graph paper: `#E6E0F2`
- mint sticker: `#CFE8D4`
- sky sticker: `#C9DFF2`
- manila: `#E8D9B0`

- **On the record · Our reading** · `claim:dcc:color-5` → Let colour arrive with the items; do not lay a palette over them from outside.
- **On the record · Documented** · `claim:kcc:w2-color-1` → In Victorian albums the colour came from printed, embossed and die-cut scraps glued onto the page.
- **Web translation** — Give each item its own paper and ink pair, checked for contrast on its own. _Why:_ Colour belongs to each item, so contrast is each item's job. (`claim:dcc:color-5`)
- **Not specified by the source** — A coordinated kit palette is documented but not required. _Instead:_ Modern kits sell coordinated papers; use one if the album is built from a kit, and say so.
- **Not specified by the source** — Black album pages are a documented historical choice, and a harmful one. _Instead:_ Do not use a black ground as a period cue; conservators count it among the worst for photographs.

### Typography

Family: handwriting (the record's type), for short labels; each scrap's own system face for sentences. Stack: `"Marker SK", "Chalkboard SE", "Comic Sans MS", cursive`

| Role | Size | Weight | Line height | Case | Tracking | Measure | Use |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| label | 0.95rem to 1.4rem | 400 | 1.25 | not specified | not specified | — | Handwritten labels and notes, in Permanent Marker or Caveat. |
| text | 0.95rem | 400 | 1.6 | not specified | not specified | 46rem | Sentences, in the scrap's own system face (typewriter, Georgia, Verdana). |
| tag | 0.7rem | 400 | 1.4 | not specified | 0.04em | — | Date and source tags, in Courier. |

- **On the record · From our catalogue entry** · `token_rule:typography-4` → Use handwriting.
- **On the record · Documented** · `claim:kcc:technique-3` → Mix handwritten entries with printed matter in the same volume.
- **Web translation** — Keep handwriting faces to short labels; set sentences in each scrap's own printed face. _Why:_ Handwriting and print share the page; long passages in a script face stop being readable. (`token_rule:typography-4`, `claim:kcc:technique-3`)
- **Not specified by the source** — The sources do not specify a handwriting face. _Instead:_ A font stands in for a hand; the record lists a typeset handwriting substitute as a failure, so use real handwriting where you can.

### Grid and layout

No grid: a pile. Items land where they were put, rotated and overlapping at their edges, in the order they arrived.

Tokens: rotate `-5deg to 3deg` · overlap `-2.2rem` · lap-zone `3rem`

- **On the record · From our catalogue entry** · `token_rule:layout-3` → Rotate, layer and leave items unaligned.
- **On the record · Our reading** · `token_rule:sb-r1` → Let overlap, tape, uneven margins and mixed stock read as separate decisions over time.
- **Web translation** — Keep DOM order as arrival order so the newest item paints on top. _Why:_ Stacking order is the hierarchy; paint order follows the DOM. (`token_rule:hierarchy-13`)
- **Web translation** — Below a readable width, take the rotation and overlap off and stack items. _Why:_ The pile must not bury the words it holds. (`token_rule:layout-3`)

### Shape and geometry

Tokens: radius `0` · tape `striped translucent strip, 3.4 to 5.2rem` · corner `0.55rem triangle`

- **On the record · From our catalogue entry** · `token_rule:surface-8` → Attach with tape, sticker layers and whatever else is at hand.
- **On the record · Documented** · `claim:kcc:technique-2` → Modern hobby practice mounts with photo corners, adhesive dots, mounting tape or glue.
- **Web translation** — Draw tape as translucent striped strips at the corners. _Why:_ Washi tape is the record's motif reading; the mt line dates from 2008, so it is contemporary, not period. (`claim:surface-8.motif`, `claim:kcc:definition`)

### Imagery

- **On the record · From our catalogue entry** · `token_rule:imagery-7` → Use scanned ephemera.
- **On the record · Documented** · `claim:kcc:definition` → Keep printed keepsakes and ephemera, the things accumulated over time.
- **Not specified by the source** — Ageing is documented but is not the look. _Instead:_ Brittle glue and popped corners are what age does to an album; do not fake them.

### Accumulation

The book fills over time and swells: items are added one by one, and what is added last leads.

- **On the record · Documented** · `claim:kcc:form-1` → Take the form of a book, box or card that holds what is added to it.
- **On the record · Documented** · `claim:kcc:form-2` → Inserted items add bulk that can stop the book from closing.
- **Web translation** — Let the page grow downward as items are added, with no fixed height. _Why:_ A book that swells with inserts becomes a page that lengthens. (`claim:kcc:form-2`, `token_rule:hierarchy-13`)

### Components

Anatomy, tokens and states below are Web translation: Aesthetary's specification for the screen. Each value line after them says whether it restates a rule this record holds.

#### Button

A sticker: a small paper label stuck on at a slight angle, its words handwritten in marker.

- Anatomy: paper label in its own colour; label in the marker face; slight rotation (under 3deg); soft paper shadow
- Tokens: background `#F4C7D2` · color `#4A1322` · rotate `-2deg` · radius `999px`
- State, default: A pink sticker, tilted -2deg.
- State, hover: The sticker straightens to 0deg: pressed flat.
- State, focus: 3px ink outline, 3px out.
- State, active: Shadow drops away: stuck down.
- State, disabled: Dashed edge, no shadow, label struck through.
- Accessibility: Label on pink at 9.9:1.
- Accessibility: At least 44px tall.
- Accessibility: Rotation stays under 3deg so the label reads.
- **Web translation** — Make the button a sticker, stuck on at a small angle. _Why:_ Albums are often decorated with stickers, and the record reads rotation as the mark of a hand placing things. (`claim:kcc:definition`, `token_rule:layout-3`)
- **Web translation** — Set the short label in a handwriting face. _Why:_ Handwriting is the record's type; short labels are where it stays legible. (`token_rule:typography-4`)

#### Card

A scrap: a piece of its own paper, taped or cornered to the board, overlapping the one before it.

- Anatomy: own paper stock and colour; attachment at the corners (tape, photo corners); a date or source tag; text in a system face; blank lap zone at the foot
- Tokens: padding `1.35rem 1.25rem 3rem` · overlap `-2.2rem` · rotate `-5deg to 3deg` · shadow `0 1px 2px, 0 10px 22px (kraft-tinted)`
- State, default: Rotated on the pile, taped at two corners.
- State, hover: The scrap lifts: shadow deepens.
- State, focus: 3px ink outline around the scrap.
- Accessibility: The overlap covers only the blank lap zone, never text.
- Accessibility: Below 820px the rotation and overlap come off and scraps stack.
- Accessibility: Paint order is DOM order, so reading order and stacking agree.
- **Web translation** — Rank by stacking order: the item added last sits on top and leads. _Why:_ The cited rule belongs to the Aesthetic's own medium; applying it to a screen component or motion is our translation. (`token_rule:hierarchy-13`)
- **Web translation** — Attach items by almost any means: paste, tape, corners, pins. _Why:_ The cited rule belongs to the Aesthetic's own medium; applying it to a screen component or motion is our translation. (`claim:kcc:technique-1`)
- **Web translation** — Give each card its own paper and colour rather than one card style. _Why:_ Colour arrives with the items; no palette is laid over them. (`claim:dcc:color-5`, `token_rule:sb-r1`)

#### Input

A line on a legal pad: a ruled yellow slip with the label handwritten above it.

- Anatomy: legal-pad yellow slip; one ruled line to write on; label above in the handwriting face; error as a note below
- Tokens: background `#F8E9A0` · color `#3A2E07` · border `0 0 2px #3A2E07` · radius `0`
- State, default: Ruled line on the yellow slip.
- State, focus: 3px ink outline around the slip.
- State, error: A note below beginning "Error:", in the slip ink.
- State, disabled: Dashed line.
- Accessibility: Ink on yellow at 10.9:1.
- Accessibility: The label is real text above the field.
- Accessibility: Typed text is in a system face, not the handwriting face.
- **Web translation** — Rule the field as a line on a pad and handwrite its label. _Why:_ Albums carry journal entries written with pens beside the pasted items. (`claim:kcc:technique-2`, `claim:kcc:definition`)
- **Not specified by the source** — Scrapbook form conventions are not researched yet. _Instead:_ Keep the field plain enough to use; do not rotate it.

#### Navigation

A row of index tabs cut from different papers, the current one stuck out furthest.

- Anatomy: tabs in mixed stock; labels in the marker face; current tab raised and taped
- Tokens: raise `-6px` · radius `6px 6px 0 0`
- State, default: Each tab its own paper, slightly uneven heights.
- State, hover: Tab rises 3px.
- State, focus: 3px ink outline.
- State, current: Raised 6px with a strip of tape across it.
- Accessibility: aria-current on the current page.
- Accessibility: Tabs stay upright; only their heights vary.
- **Web translation** — Cut the tabs from mixed papers at uneven heights. _Why:_ Mixed stock and uneven margins read as separate decisions by a person over time. (`token_rule:sb-r1`)
- **Web translation** — Mark the current page by stacking it on top of the others. _Why:_ The top item leads. (`token_rule:hierarchy-13`)

### Motion

- **Web translation** — If anything moves, a newly added item lands rotated on top of the pile; nothing else animates. _Why:_ Our reading of the accumulation logic; it is an open question on the record, and this room does not move. (`token_rule:motion-14`)
- **Not specified by the source** — The sources do not specify screen motion. _Instead:_ Movable paper elements appear in some period scrapbooks; that is paper mechanics, not a licence for animation.

### Deliberately not added

- **A palette** (color): Colour comes with the items. Kit palettes are documented, not required.
- **A handwriting face** (typography): The record says handwriting; a font is a stand-in.
- **Interface conventions** (components): Digital scrapbooking software supplies templates, but the research record does not establish interface rules. The four components are contemporary translations.
- **Screen motion** (motion): An open question on the record.

## Coverage — what has been looked at

One row per research dimension a research pass considered. "Not researched yet" (`UNKNOWN`) means exactly that; a dimension can carry an Aesthetary recommendation and still be unresearched, and those are different things.

| Research dimension | Evidence | Resolved by | Carries a rule |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Composition | Specified · From our catalogue entry | follows the recorded claim | yes |
| Typography | Specified · From our catalogue entry | follows the recorded claim | yes |
| Hierarchy | Specified · Our reading | Aesthetary decided | yes |
| Colour | Specified | Aesthetary decided | yes |
| Density | Not specified by the source | Aesthetary decided | no |
| Imagery | Specified · From our catalogue entry | follows the recorded claim | yes |
| Form/motif/surface/technique | Specified | follows the recorded claim | yes |
| Motion | Open question | Aesthetary decided | yes |

Unresearched: Colour, Motion. Where a rule appears for one of these it is Aesthetary's implementation recommendation, not a property of the language, and its Evidence line above says so.

## Not researched yet

Nobody has established a position for this language on:

- Interface

**Do not fill these in.** An absent position is absent research, not permission and not a blank for you to complete. If the work needs a decision in one of these areas, make it on other grounds and do not attribute it to this language.

## Grade your own work

19 checks: 9 mechanically testable, 9 needing a person to look, 0 needing a source Aesthetary does not hold, 1 with no recorded position. 1 further research dimension produced no rule (Density). This rubric is silent on it. Scores do not add up. A failure against a required rule and a departure from something we invented are not the same result, and no total should let them cancel.

### Recognition — does this read as the intended Aesthetic?

- **[visual_human · recognition signature · Evidence: No grade recorded]** Strip every logo, word and borrowed image out of your work, then show it to someone who knows the collection. Do they land on this Aesthetic? The signature to hold is: Layered stickers, washi tape holding items down at their corners, handwriting in the gaps, and elements rotated off-square and overlapping at their edges, on scanned ephemera. The diagnostic condition is accumulation rather than composition: items sit on top of one another in the order they arrived, and nothing aligns to anything. Digital Collage, a Module, arranges found material deliberately. Hand-Drawn, also a Module, is one mark-making treatment this register uses among several.
  - _If it fails:_ The work may be competent and still read as a different Aesthetic, or as none. Nothing below matters until this passes.

### Fidelity — are its defining rules present?

- **[unassessable · no recorded position · Evidence: Not researched yet (`UNKNOWN`)]** Nothing is recorded as a requirement of this Aesthetic. There is no rule here that your work must hold — which means nothing you do can fail this dimension, and nothing you do can satisfy it either. That is missing research, not freedom: our research brief does record failure modes to avoid, listed under avoidance below. They are recorded judgement, not requirements.
  - _If it fails:_ Not applicable. An empty dimension is an absence of research, never a pass and never a failure.

### Implementation — were those rules translated appropriately into this medium?

- **[visual_human · From our catalogue entry · Evidence: From our catalogue entry]** Your work may depart from this — but knowingly, not by accident. Composition: rotated, layered, unaligned.
  - _If it fails:_ A defensible departure, and you should be able to say why you made it.
- **[visual_human · From our catalogue entry · Evidence: From our catalogue entry]** Your work may depart from this — but knowingly, not by accident. Typography: handwriting.
  - _If it fails:_ A defensible departure, and you should be able to say why you made it.
- **[visual_human · Our reading · Evidence: Our reading]** Your work may depart from this — but knowingly, not by accident. Rank by stacking order — the most recently added item sits on top and therefore leads.
  - _If it fails:_ A defensible departure, and you should be able to say why you made it.
- **[visual_human · From our catalogue entry · Evidence: From our catalogue entry]** Your work may depart from this — but knowingly, not by accident. Imagery: scanned ephemera.
  - _If it fails:_ A defensible departure, and you should be able to say why you made it.
- **[visual_human · From our catalogue entry · Evidence: From our catalogue entry]** Your work may depart from this — but knowingly, not by accident. Form/motif/surface/technique: sticker layers, washi tape.
  - _If it fails:_ A defensible departure, and you should be able to say why you made it.
- **[visual_human · Our reading · Evidence: Our reading]** Your work may depart from this — but knowingly, not by accident. Items added on interaction, landing rotated on top of the pile. Native to the accumulation logic.
  - _If it fails:_ Nothing. No one has researched the dimension yet, and this is only what Aesthetary would do. Departing from it costs you nothing.
- **[visual_human · Our reading · Evidence: Our reading]** Your work may depart from this — but knowingly, not by accident. Accumulation by a person over time: overlap, tape, uneven margin and mixed stock read as a sequence of separate decisions rather than one layout.
  - _If it fails:_ A defensible departure, and you should be able to say why you made it.

### Avoidance — known failure modes, neighbour drift, cloning

- **[mechanical · recorded failure mode · Evidence: No grade recorded]** Check your work against this: No alignment or grid.
  - _If it fails:_ A failure mode recorded in our research brief: recorded judgement about what weakens this Aesthetic, not a requirement of the language.
- **[mechanical · recorded failure mode · Evidence: No grade recorded]** Check your work against this: No palette laid over the items from outside them.
  - _If it fails:_ A failure mode recorded in our research brief: recorded judgement about what weakens this Aesthetic, not a requirement of the language.
- **[mechanical · recorded failure mode · Evidence: No grade recorded]** Check your work against this: No even spacing.
  - _If it fails:_ A failure mode recorded in our research brief: recorded judgement about what weakens this Aesthetic, not a requirement of the language.
- **[mechanical · recorded failure mode · Evidence: No grade recorded]** Check your work against this: No single focal composition.
  - _If it fails:_ A failure mode recorded in our research brief: recorded judgement about what weakens this Aesthetic, not a requirement of the language.
- **[mechanical · recorded failure mode · Evidence: No grade recorded]** Check your work against this: No typeset handwriting substitute.
  - _If it fails:_ A failure mode recorded in our research brief: recorded judgement about what weakens this Aesthetic, not a requirement of the language.
- **[visual_human · recorded failure mode · Evidence: No grade recorded]** Have you made any of these changes? Each one moves the work into a neighbouring Aesthetic: Against Digital Collage (Module): piled versus composed. Against Hand-Drawn (Module): one treatment used here, not a peer. Anti-signature: align anything, or coordinate the palette, and it becomes composed collage.
  - _If it fails:_ You have built the neighbour. That may be fine — but name which Aesthetic you are in.
- **[mechanical · declared closure · Evidence: No grade recorded]** Check your work against this: Not open: aligning.
  - _If it fails:_ This one is closed, not open. The record says generation must not go here.
- **[mechanical · declared closure · Evidence: No grade recorded]** Check your work against this: Not open: composing.
  - _If it fails:_ This one is closed, not open. The record says generation must not go here.
- **[mechanical · declared closure · Evidence: No grade recorded]** Check your work against this: Not open: coordinating..
  - _If it fails:_ This one is closed, not open. The record says generation must not go here.

### Accessibility — the Aesthetic preserved without its inaccessible practice

- **[mechanical · recorded accessibility cost · Evidence: No grade recorded]** This Aesthetic accepts "Legibility" as a cost. Your reader did not. Does your work carry that cost in the decorative layer only — display, demonstration, atmosphere — while every passage meant to be read holds a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1?
  - _If it fails:_ You have inherited a historical cost that the language never required you to pass on. The Aesthetic survives at AA on reading matter; reproducing the cost is a choice, not fidelity.

**Not covered at all:** Density: Not specified by the source. These research dimensions produced no rule, so there is no check. Treat them as unscored, never as passed and never as failed.

## Rules for the agent

1. Do not invent rules for any area listed under **Not researched yet**.
2. Do not treat an absent position as permission to do anything you like — say that the language has no position, and decide on other grounds.
3. Keep our interpretations separable from the language's own requirements. If asked to justify a choice, cite which kind of claim it came from.
4. If you need something this record does not contain, say so rather than producing a confident answer from the aesthetic's name.
5. When you self-score against "Grade your own work", score only checks marked `mechanical`. Declare `visual_human` and `evidence_dependent` checks unjudged rather than guessing, and never score an `unassessable` one.
6. Evidence "Not researched yet" (`UNKNOWN`) is never a failure. It means nobody researched the dimension, so departing from what is written there costs nothing and must not be reported as a defect. "No grade recorded" is not a grade either: do not treat it as our decision or as an outside source.
7. In **Design grammar**, a "Web translation" line is our choice for the web and may be changed with a reason; the rules it cites may not. Never present a translation as a property of the language.
